The Many Different Kinds of Orthodontic Braces That Are Now Available

by | Jun 19, 2019 | Dentist

Dental braces are surprisingly old. Archaeologists have found mummies with catgut and metal bands wrapped around their teeth to try to close gaps. While other ancient civilizations like the Romans also used crude orthodontics, the discipline didn’t really develop until sometime in the 18th century. The first modern metal braces appeared in the early 1900s and were made from silver or gold, which were soft and easy to adjust.

The Different Types of Braces
Modern dental braces in West Loop come in several different types. Traditional metal braces are still the most common type. Not only are they effective, they are also less expensive than other types of braces. Today’s metal braces are also smaller and less noticeable than the “railroad tracks” of yore.

Lingual braces are metal braces that are placed on the backs of the teeth, facing the tongue. They are thus completely hidden from view.

So-called clear braces aren’t really transparent; the bands and brackets are actually made of porcelain or plastic that is the exact same color as the patient’s teeth. The archwire is the only immediately visible part.

Invisalign Braces
Removable and transparent aligners like Invisalign are the newest type; they were first developed in 2000. The patient will wear a set of plastic “trays” over their teeth for at least 22 hours a day. Like fixed braces, the trays will gradually shift the teeth into their proper positions. With Invisalign braces, you can take the trays out to eat and clean your teeth. Thus, Invisalign has the advantage of making it a lot easier to clean your teeth. When wearing these, you can also eat whatever you like. The dentist replaces the set of trays about every two weeks. Invisalign, however, works best for relatively minor problems. Patients with more severe bite problems will probably need fixed braces.
