A clutch in a car is very important as it provides force for a car. It is used often in manual transmission cars and can get worn fairly quickly. Since wear and tear can happen over time, it is important to know when to replace a clutch plate.
Pickup is Lacking
Pickup in your car is a good sign that your clutch is in shape. When it takes longer to feel the pickup or acceleration, this could be a sign of what is called slippage. This just means that the clutch friction plate has worn so much that there is no more resistance on them. Without the friction, switching gears will not be as efficient and fuel economy will not be as great.
Rough Gear Shifting
If you have trouble getting out of gear or shifting gears, you may need to check the clutch plate. There may be accompanying grinding noises that you may hear while attempting to shift. The clutch may not be fully releasing and a worn clutch plate is more than likely the culprit.
Installation
Even during installation or replacement of a clutch plate damage can be done. Make sure to handle with care. If you drop or mistakenly hit the plate, inspect it for damage. Any dent or crack could render the friction plate faulty or useless. You don’t want to head back to the car parts store and shell out more money due to your error. Pay attention to detail when installing.
Clutch Feel
When you press on the clutch and it feels soft and spongy, the clutch plates may be worn. A too soft clutch is a danger when driving and should be checked immediately.
This applies to a shaking feel as well. A shaking feel is also an indicator that the plates are worn. Pay attention as you drive to any changing handling of your car.
