What Is a Manual Chain Hoist?
A manual chain hoist has several different names. It is a

All terms refer to the same apparatus – a hand-operated pulley system utilizing gears, a housing system, chains, hooks and slings, used for lifting, moving and lowering loads of various weights. The system is attached overhead via a clamp. This anchors the system in place on either a lifting gantry or jib crane. A bottom hook, in conjunction with a sling, bucket or another type of receptacle, contains the load. The operator then slowly and evenly pulls down on the chain. This moves around the gears and causes the load to lift. Pulling down the opposite chain lowers the load into place. A brake is included to secure the load. Other devices may come into play to prevent overloading, increase versatility and improve safety measures.
Applications of Manual Chain Hoists
The designs of chain hoists vary. The basic purpose does not. Chain hoists lift and power loads across a warehouse floor or oilrig platform. They then lower the items into the desired position. However, the lack of mechanization does restrict the actual application. This type of chain hoist is for light assignments. It is for maintenance work and similar type of duties. They perform lifts when the maximum load capacity is 20 tons.
While other chain hoists may be faster and carry heavier loads, manual chain hoists are often preferred in hostile environments. The protected housing of the mechanisms and other components makes it more durable for certain indoor and outdoor applications. This includes workplaces that use toxic chemicals as well as the platforms of oilrigs at sea. They are also the perfect alternative where electricity is scare or absent or even dangerous to employ.
