Craft a Future for Your Shop

by | Oct 6, 2015 | Woodworking

Even if you’re just starting out on your own you need to develop the resources that will help you grow your business. It’s never too early to start networking with other woodworking professionals. One of the best ways to start networking is by attending the 2016 International Woodworkers Fair in Atlanta. This isn’t a shop bull session, but an international exposition and woodworkers network.

Talk Shop

If you’ve ever had a problem and wish that you could talk to another woodworker with more experience, learn a new technique or piece of equipment, but had no idea where to go, here’s your answer. Trade shows and conventions are not a time to party down for most people, in general they’re all about business. Shows like the IWF offer unique opportunities for woodworkers at all levels to meet, greet, learn, and evaluate new products. If you’ve ever wanted to see the latest in CNC routers, set up a supply chain directly with manufacturers, or learn how to advertise and market your product, you don’t need a general course at the local community college. You need to attend a trade show specific to your craft, which can address your concerns and help you to grow.

Networking Pays Off

Networking is not all about social media. Websites and apps like LinkedIn and Twitter can only take you so far. Developing your skills at networking is really essential. The best networking is not “working a room” but from genuine relationships that both parties take time to develop. If you see someone you would like to network with, approach it as you would making a friend. See what you have in common with them, keep it light, and above all be 100 percent genuine you. As you find yourself progressing further into the woodworkers network, remember that you’re not doing this to keep score, or make contacts, you are doing this to make one on one connections.

Business to Business, Person to Person

When you think about the best contacts that you made, you will be surprised at how much they are like friendships. You would want a vendor to treat you not only as a business, but as a person. You’ll notice that some of your favorite salespeople are people that you genuinely wouldn’t mind having a few beers with. As a business person yourself, there are also some clients that you wouldn’t mind having a few beers with. Come down to Atlanta in 2016 and meet some of the best people you’ll ever meet in your life.
