Uses And Considerations With 7075 T6 Aluminum

by | Sep 1, 2015 | Aluminum

To distinguish it from other aluminum alloys, 7075 T6 aluminum has zinc as the main or primary element acting as the alloy. As such it is very strong, comparable to several different types of steels and is also easy to work with compared to those same steels.

With the addition of zinc, 7075 T6 aluminum does give up some of the very high levels of corrosion resistance found in various other aluminum alloys, but it is still considered a good corrosion resistant option in most types of applications. It can be used effectively in both high heats as well as low temperatures.

The designation of T6 with the 7075 T6 aluminum means it has the T6 temper and actually has a tensile strength of 74,000-78,000 psi. To create this temper, the alloy is homogenized at a temperature of 450 degrees Celsius for several hours. It is also kept for up to 24 hours at 120 degrees Celsius to complete the aging process and to allow natural hardening of the alloy.

Composition

The actual composition of 7075 T6 aluminum can vary based on the amount of aluminum and zinc used in the alloy. This can range from the aluminum at 87.1-91.4% and the zinc at a range of 5.1 to 6.1%. There is also a significant amount of copper, at 1.2 to 2% followed by chromium, iron, magnesium and manganese.

This creates a final alloy which is rated as between average to good for machinability and anodizing response. However, it is important to keep in mind 7075 T6 aluminum is not considered to be weldable.

Industries and Applications

The 7075 T6 aluminum is used in the aerospace industry and in the manufacturing of aircraft. This can include the structural components as well as some of the smaller, machined parts. In general this alloy is used throughout the aerospace and aircraft industry only in applications where the decrease in corrosion resistance is not a factor.

It can also be used in other types of applications such as in the fabrication of model aircraft and remote controlled models which often use 7075 as the chassis or for parts of the frame.
7075 T6 aluminum is used in the in the manufacturing of M16 rifles. It is also used in the manufacturing of precision rifles, in some types of specialty knives and in some frames for hand gliders and rock climbing equipment.
